Mitigating capacity fading in aqueous organic redox flow batteries through a simple electrochemical charge balancing protocol

Aqueous organic redox flow batteries (AORFBs) have recently been attracting much attention due to their potential utilization as a sustainable solution for stationary energy storage. However, AORFBs still face various challenges become competitive technology other mature batteries. Fading of the storage capacity upon cycling leading insufficient lifetime is likely most pressing issue. Several processes are contributing this Among fading promoters, existence side reactions such water splitting and related oxygen reduction triggers an imbalanced state charge catholyte anolyte. Herein, simple electrochemical balancing procedure proposed successfully demonstrated through restoration oxidation states two half-cell solutions. The results reveal that it possible mitigate even revert effects reactions, developing useful method mitigating prolonging performance AORFBs. In case studies, implementation charging leads remarkable 20-fold (% h−1). protocol general approach batteries, easily implementable inexpensive.
